Award Categories

The Ontario Export Awards recognize the innovative approaches and unique contributions of Ontario registered export companies across sectors and in all regions of the province as well as the individuals who contribute to their success.  Details of award categories including descriptions and judging criteria are available below.

The 2016 Ontario Export Award categories are divided into 2 sections:

Sector Awards

Sector Awards recognize those companies in various sectors who have made an outstanding contribution to the economy in Ontario through the export of products and services.

Awards of Excellence

Awards of Excellence are awarded to companies demonstrating outstanding achievement. Applicants can apply directly for the Business Studies Student Award and the Leadership Award.


SECTOR CATEGORIES

Clean Technology

Appropriate for companies exporting products, goods or services geared toward sustainability, reduction of carbon emissions, water conservation, renewable energy and related products and services.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

Consumer Products & Technology

Includes companies or organizations that export consumer goods, electronics, technology and related products and services.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

Food, Beverage and Agriculture

Includes companies that are engaged in exporting food, beverage and agri-based products and services.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

 

Manufacturing & Resources

This category recognizes Ontario companies that export manufactured goods; along with exporters of resources and commodities.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

 

Services

Includes companies or organizations that provide professional services, expert advice, technical support, engineering, consulting or educational programs which is specialized expertise to Ontario markets.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

Transportation Equipment

Includes companies that are engaged in manufacturing and/or assembly equipment, parts and components for the automotive, aerospace, rail, marine and machinery industries.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

 

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

Exporter of the Year

Recognizes an Ontario exporter who has excelled in international market penetration and made a significant contribution to the development of Ontario’s economy.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the company must be a winner in one of the seven category Awards.

 

Selection Criteria
The Ontario Export Awards Judging Panel will determine the winner based on the “best of the best” of Sector Award winners.

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • A sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Demonstrated that they have significantly contributed to the Ontario economy through economic growth in their community, new investment and job creation.
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

Emerging Exporter

This award honours an Ontario exporter who is starting to excel in international exporting and contribute to the province’s economic development.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Produced goods or services that have Canadian content
  • Earned foreign exchange
  • Been operating for a minimum of two years and have entered a new market within the last three years or has demonstrated growth in existing export markets

Global Reach Presented by: Machines Italia

The Global Reach Award recognizes companies that have diversified far beyond North American markets to achieve significant international exporting success and/or have established effective global trade relationships to boost their exporting competitiveness.

Eligibility

To be eligible the company must have:

  • Demonstration of established or high volume exporting programs to markets beyond North America.
  • An outline of the company’s successful global exporting strategy and approach.
  • Indications of the company’s investment in the resources, marketing and development required to grow in foreign markets.

Selection Criteria

The Ontario Export Awards Judging Panel will determine the winner based on the following criteria:

  • Has a sound capital base with sufficient working capital to support their export activity
  • Demonstrated significant year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales or increased sales volume over the past year
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles or other unique challenges in entering new international market
  • Demonstrated quality of their export plan through use of innovation and strategies to promote brand awareness in their new market(s)
  • Shown notable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering that new international marketplace

 

Leadership Award

Recognizes an organization or individual known for championing the cause of exporting in Ontario within their industry or field of expertise.

Eligibility

To be eligible the organization or individual must be in a private company or not-for-profit organization in Ontario with demonstrated leadership capabilities and have played a significant role in exporting.

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes, namely:

  • Publicly recognized by their peers in industry and the general public of Ontario as leading efforts to promote exporting in the province
  • Demonstrated vision and entrepreneurship by taking risks and managing for the future
  • Seen as an innovator who thinks outside the box and who motivates and inspires others by their efforts
  • Has worked for the betterment of people and the industry

Business Studies Student Award

Recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership, excelled in their international business studies (be it international business, finance, relations or economics) and have made a significant contribution to the export community in Ontario.

Eligibility

To be eligible the individual must be attending a post secondary school in Ontario and be actively involved in programs that involve international studies.

Scholarship Details
Value: $500

Selection Criteria

The successful nominees will have the following attributes:

  • Letter of recommendation from their class or program and educational institution for their initiative and potential to become a leading contributor to the International trade community
  • Submit a CV, including the following information:

– Details of learning achievements through business and/or enterprise development projects
– Background of having studied or worked in other countries, or have gained other notable international experience;
– Demonstration of excellence in international studies and a grade point academic standing in the top quartile of the faculty.
